If you’re new to Taekwondo, the idea of competing in a tournament might sound a little intimidating. You may be wondering, “Am I ready?” or “Do I need to be an advanced student to compete?”
The answer might surprise you.
Martial arts tournaments aren’t just for experienced competitors or Black Belts. They’re an opportunity for students of all ages and experience levels to challenge themselves, build confidence, celebrate their progress, and experience the martial arts community in a whole new way.
That’s why we’re excited to welcome students, families, instructors, and schools to Legacy Martial Arts for our 2026 City of Trees GSHIM Celebration on October 9-10 in Meridian, Idaho!
What Is a Taekwondo Tournament?
A Taekwondo tournament gives students an opportunity to take the skills they’ve been practicing in class and put them to the test in an exciting, supportive environment.
Depending on their age, rank, and division, students may have opportunities to compete alongside others at a similar level and demonstrate the techniques they’ve worked hard to develop.
But competition is about much more than winning a medal.
It’s about having the courage to step onto the mat.
It’s about performing when you’re nervous, learning how to handle both wins and losses, supporting your teammates, meeting students from other schools, and discovering what you’re capable of doing.
Those experiences can be valuable whether you’ve been training for years or you’re still relatively new to Taekwondo.
”But I’m New. Should I Really Compete?”
Absolutely!
You do not have to wait until you’re a Black Belt or feel like you’ve “mastered” Taekwondo before experiencing your first tournament.
In fact, competing as a newer student can be an incredible learning experience.
Your first tournament gives you a chance to set a goal and work toward it. It can help you become more comfortable performing in front of others, teach you how to manage nerves, and show you where your training is already paying off.
And tournaments aren’t just for kids!
Teen and adult students can benefit from competition for many of the same reasons. Stepping outside your comfort zone, setting a new goal, testing your skills, and experiencing the energy of a martial arts tournament can add an entirely new dimension to your training.
You don’t have to walk into your first tournament expecting to win.
Sometimes the biggest victory is simply being willing to step onto the mat.
The Benefits Go Far Beyond Competition
One of our favorite things about tournaments is seeing students come away with much more than medals.
Competition gives students an opportunity to develop:
- Confidence from performing under pressure
- Courage to try something unfamiliar
- Focus and discipline while preparing for an event
- Sportsmanship through winning and losing with respect
- Perseverance when things don’t go exactly as planned
- Goal-setting skills as they prepare for competition
- Stronger friendships with teammates and competitors
- Motivation to return to class and continue improving
These are the same life skills we work to develop every day at Legacy Martial Arts.
Welcome to the 2026 City of Trees GSHIM Celebration
This October, we’re bringing the martial arts community together right here in Meridian for the City of Trees GSHIM Celebration.
The weekend begins Friday, October 9 with Team Sparring from 4:00 to 5:30 PM, followed by Testing and Mid-Terming at 6:00 PM.
Then, on Saturday, October 10, it’s tournament day!
Doors open at 8:00 AM, followed by the Black Belt Meeting at 8:30 AM, line up at 8:50 AM, Opening Ceremonies at 9:00 AM, and the tournament beginning at 9:30 AM.

Spectator admission is $10, and children ages 4 and under are free.
Compete for Something Bigger
This year’s City of Trees GSHIM Celebration also gives us an opportunity to support an important cause.
Legacy Martial Arts will be raising funds for the Wildland Firefighter Foundation, an organization dedicated to supporting wildland firefighters and their families.
That means our students aren’t just coming together to compete. We’re coming together as a martial arts community to help make a difference.
