Krav Maga is the official self-defense system of the Israeli Defense Forces and has been taught to hundreds of law enforcement agencies and thousands of civilians in the United States. It offers a unique approach to personal safety that can be used by anyone regardless of age, gender or fitness level.

The History of Krav Maga

The first person to develop Krav Maga was Imi Lichtenfeld. Trained as a boxer and a wrestler, Lichtenfeld developed the new Martial Art to help defend the Jewish quarter from fascist groups in Czechoslovakia during the late 1930s and early 1940s. He started to give lessons on Krav Maga to the Israeli Defense Forces after immigrating to Israel in the late 1940s. The development of the Martial Art took off from here and has since been refined by the Mossad and Shin Bet law enforcement and intelligence organizations.

Principles of Krav Maga

The primary goal of Krav Maga is to neutralize the threat. You want to do this as quickly and efficiently as possible. Because the aim is to neutralize the threat in a life-or-death situation, anything goes in Krav Maga. There is very little fighting etiquette to learn and an emphasis is placed on attacking vulnerable soft tissues and pressure points, such as the eyes, neck or throat, face, solar plexus, groin, ribs, knee, foot, and fingers.

Maintaining an awareness of your surroundings is also taught. In a street setting, it is vital to know what is happening all around you. For example, if you are arguing with someone on the street, you don’t know the intentions of any third-party observers gathered around you. They could very well be looking for an opportunity to attack.

Another important principle of Krav Maga is simultaneous defense and attack. Unlike many other Martial Arts, defensive and offensive movements are combined into a single continuous movement. When blocking an attack, you are also performing a counterattack. This is also where the principle of Retzev, or continuous motion, comes into play.

Finally, Krav Maga doesn’t shy away from the use of weapons. Practitioners are taught how to incorporate firearms and knives into the Martial Art. They are also taught how to improvise and use random objects such as keys, pens, belts, and chairs as weapons.

What should I wear/bring?
Loose fitting exercise clothing with gym, wrestling or boxing shoes (non skid soles only). Also bring water, a towel, and groin protection for men.

Sign up information is explained in person. This will be covered the day you try a class or you may also stop by our school and one of our staff members will be happy to assist you.

Do I need previous martial arts experience or to be in great shape?
Definitely not! This is an easily learned system not based on traditional training styles. In regards to being in shape – you’ll get there!
